US says Iran can participate in 2026 World Cup but bars individuals with IRGC ties

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the US has no objections to Iranian athletes playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which begins June 11 across the US, Mexico, and Canada. However, Rubio said individuals with ties to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which the US designates as a foreign terrorist organization, will not be permitted entry. Iran had previously requested FIFA move its group-stage matches out of the US following the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran on February 28.
