Nicaragua confirms death of Indigenous leader Brooklyn Rivera in custody.

Brooklyn Rivera, a 73-year-old Indigenous leader and founder of Yatama, died in Nicaraguan state custody after nearly three years of detention. The government attributed his death to health complications following a COVID-19 infection, while rights advocates blamed the conditions of his detention. Rivera had been held incommunicado since September 2023.
